Dr. Norbert Cheung

Dr Norbert C. Cheung obtained his BSc, MSc, and PhD from the University of London, University of Hong Kong and University of New South Wales in 1981, 1987 and 1996 respectively.

From 1981 to 1985 he worked in the Advanced Manufacturing Dept. of General Electric (HK), and the Electronics Services Division, Hong Kong Productivity Council. During this period, he acted as the project leader for the development of Hong Kong's first CNC Photo Plotter System.

From 1985 to 1992 he worked as a lecturer and a senior lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. After that he went to Australia and undertook a PhD in actuator control at the University of New South Wales.

After graduation, Dr. Cheung worked for 2 years as a Technical Manager at ASM Assembly Automation, in the areas of intelligent motion control and robotics systems. He rejoined the HK Polytechnic University in 1997, and he has been the Associate Professor at the Electrical Engineering Department. After 2019 he continued to serve the PolyU EEE Department as an Adjunct Associate Professor until now.

 

From 2021-2024, Dr. Cheung also served as an Associate Professor at the College of Mechatronics and Control Engineering, in Shenzhen University.

Dr. Norbert Cheung has published more than 70 journal papers, more than 120 conference papers, and has obtained 8 patent inventions. He has received the 2006 President's Award for Excellence Achievement, the IEEE Industry Application Society Best Paper Award, the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Best Presentation Award, the Chinese Power Supply Society Outstanding Paper Award, and the HK Polytechnic University's Most Valued Product Development Award.

Dr Cheung is a Chartered Engineer, a member of  the IET, and a senior member of the IEEE. He was the IEEE Chair for the Hong Kong Section in 2013.  He was also the Chair/Co-chair/Organizing Committee for more than 20 Conferences.

 

In September 2024, Dr Cheung was voted by the John P.A. Loannidis team of Stanford University, as the global top 2% most influential Lifetime Scientist, covering the years 1960-2023.
